Children and Youth in Worship and Learning

Children and youth are a vital part of life together at Shepherd of the Hills.  We are devoted to nurturing their faith as they grow into the fullness of Christ.

Learning – 9:00 – 9:45am

Sunday School for four year olds and up is offered every week, September through June.  Our curriculum resource follows the Narrative Lectionary, which means the kids are engaging in the same Bible stories that are part of the worship service.  Spiritual practices of stewardship, prayer, worship, fellowship and service are a key element of their learning.   Plus, there’s lots of fun engaging ways for the children to learn.

Confirmation for middle school youth allows them to build relationships with one another and adult mentors as they explore faith and life.

Worship – 10:00am

God’s word is for all!  Therefore it is proclaimed to our youngest through words and actions each week in a puppet show presentation of the Bible story.  Volunteers write and act out the weekly message that declares the love God has for them and for all people.

Annually the children present a Children’s Christmas Message during worship service in place of the puppet message.

Children are present and welcomed at the Lord’s Table.  Communion Class is offered for children to learn more about the gift of Holy Communion.

A nursery is available each Sunday for young children.  There is also an area just outside the worship space for parents and children to utilize.

Youth Activities

July 15-19, 2015, in Detroit:  Shepherd of the Hills partnered with Our Savior Lutheran Church to participate in the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering.  Over thirty thousand senior high youth from all over the country came together to "Proclaim Justice, Proclaim Community, Proclaim Story," worship together and build friendships.  Participants described the event as "life-changing", "amazing" and "impactful."

Our team of three youths and two adults will share their impressions and experiences on Sunday, September 27 (2-4 p.m.) at a Dessert Celebration and Recap Event, to be held at SHLC. Please join us!

 Confirmation 2015

On Sunday, June 14, we confirmed five youth of our congregation, with their families and mentors by their sides. It was a beautiful celebration of God's gifts given to us in our baptism as these young people affirmed their baptismal calling.

The year of faith formation that culminated in Confirmation Sunday would not have happened without the continuous support and encouragement from the parents and mentors. Thank you, Mark, Jane, Jim, Eric and Paul!

Hope in Blanket

Pictures below are from March 2013, when a church-wide “knotting party” joined all ages together to make over twenty no-sew fleece blankets to be given to young sarcoma cancer patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital.  This awesome ministry is called "Hope in a Blanket."

Camp Lutherwood

Shepherd of the Hills supports the work of the Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center in Bellingham, Washington.

Children and youth are encouraged to be a part of weekend events and summer camp.

The congregation provides financial support for the camp which provides ministry to the youth of area parishes.
